British scientists have found that under-achievement at school is caused by a poor working memory and not low intelligence or laziness.
Scientists from Durham University studied 3,000 children at primary schools and discovered 10 percent had poor working memory.
It was also discovered that poor working memory is rarely identified by teachers. The researchers said that this problem is very likely genetically based.
Working memory is the ability to hold information in your head and manipulate it mentally.
The researchers have created a checklist - the Working Memory Rating Scale - as well as tools to help teachers recognize and help children with this problem.
To help kids with poor working memory, the scientists recommend: repetition of instructions, talking in simple short sentences and breaking down tasks into smaller chunks.
